If a local business owner hired me tomorrow and said "I need more customers," I wouldn't start by spending money on ads. I'd fix the free stuff first. The things that quietly send people to the competitor down the road instead of you. Almost none of it costs a dollar, and most owners are missing three or four of them.

Here is exactly what I'd do, in order, whether you run a shop, a trade, a gym, or a service business here on the North Shore.

1. Claim and fully fill out your Google Business Profile

This is the biggest one, and it is free. When someone searches for what you do "near me," Google shows a little map with three businesses at the top. That map pack gets more clicks than everything below it, and your Google Business Profile decides whether you are in it. Fill out all of it: the right category, every service, your real hours, and actual photos. A complete profile with steady reviews beats a half-finished one every time.

2. Build a page for everything you actually do

One page that lists all your services in a single paragraph ranks for nothing. Google ranks pages, not sentences. If you offer five services, that is five pages, each one built to answer the exact thing someone typed. When a customer searches for that specific service in your town, you want a real page waiting for them, not a hope that Google digs it out of a paragraph.

3. Build a page for every town you serve

Google treats "plumber in Peabody" and "plumber in Danvers" as completely different searches. A page that only names one town will not show up for the other. If you serve five towns, a short, honest page for each one puts you in the running for all of them instead of just the one your office sits in.

4. Show real photos, not stock

People can smell a stock photo. Real pictures of your work, your team, your truck, your shop, that is what makes someone trust you enough to call. It is the cheapest, most convincing sales tool you have, and it costs you nothing but a few minutes with your phone.

5. Get Google reviews every week

You probably have good reviews, and then you stop asking. Keep asking. A steady trickle of fresh reviews helps your map ranking and tells both Google and the customer that you are active and trusted right now, not five years ago. Make it a habit: every happy customer gets the link.

6. Make your hours and phone impossible to miss

Most people checking you out are on a phone. If they cannot instantly see whether you are open or tap once to call, you just lost them. Put your hours and phone number at the top of every page, and make the number tap-to-call. Do not make a ready-to-buy customer work to reach you.

7. Show up in AI answers, not just Google

More people are skipping the list of links and just asking ChatGPT or the AI answer at the top of Google, "who is the best plumber near me?" The businesses with a real, readable website get named. The ones living only on Facebook do not. A clear site is what earns those mentions, and this is only going to matter more.

What I wouldn't pay for first

I would not pour money into ads until the seven things above are handled. Ads send people somewhere. If that somewhere is a thin site, no reviews, and hours nobody can find, you are paying to lose them. Fix the foundation first, then paid reach pours fuel on a fire that actually burns. I would also skip the fancy stuff, the animated intro, the logo redesign. None of it gets someone in the door.

The short version

Get your Google Business Profile right, build real pages for what you do and the towns you serve, show real photos, keep the reviews coming, put your hours and phone front and center, and get yourself into the AI answers. Most businesses are missing three or four of these, and every one is a customer walking into a competitor's door, not because they are better, just because they were easier to find.
